The Perfect Chai Tea Recipe
Chai Tea is beloved around the world, and it is especially prized in India. This luscious, spicy, deeply coloured and piping hot drink is like gold and is served practically everywhere, in homes and on the sides of roads by, what are called chai wallahs. While in the western world, we can't simply run off to the nearby corner to receive steaming hot cups of this Agni-kindling goodness, we at RASA Ayurveda have endeavoured to bring this delicious nectar into your home with our Ayurvedic Tulsi Herbal Chai.
Chai is more, however, than just a drink to sip for the comfort, taste and pure pleasure that it provides. Chai is also considered a medicine. And our special masala (spice blend), especially, is such because of the addition of a unique ingredient, Tulsi leaf or holy basil, which is so well known in Ayurveda for its ability to ward off colds and flus and reduce respiratory infections, asthma, seasonal allergies, and for the way it benefits those who are afflicted with stress and anxiety.
And with the substitution of Tulsi leaf, rather than the common ingredient of black tea found in most chai recipes, we have been able to make our chai entirely caffeine-free! This will be so beneficial for all Doshic constitutions.
Our Tulsi Herbal Chai is also...
- Immune-Boosting
- A Respiratory Expectorant (so drink it all winter-long!)
- A Dipana: balancing & strengthening digestion by kindling the digestive fire (Agni)
- A Pachana: eliminating ama from the system through the Lekhana (scraping) effect
So, without further ado, here is how you can make your own perfect chai at home, and how you can make it suitable to your unique constitution:
Note: If adding honey, be sure to let the chai cool until it is warm, not boiling hot, before adding the honey, as honey becomes toxic when overheated.
