The Guide to Ayurvedic Tea
These cozy days of Autumn (Vata Season) are here, and the first thing that you may reach for, to balance the cold, dry and light qualities that accompany this season, is a comforting cup of warm tea. And your instincts would be right.
Tea is a beautiful, and deeply medicinal way of counteracting the specific Gunas (qualities) that Vata Season beckons, but it's important to remember that not every tea is made equal. And while tea itself can be deeply warming and moistening, we can also keep in mind our constitutional needs when selecting our preferred blend.
At RASA Ayurveda, we have 6 hand-blended organic + medicinal teas to select from. So, how can you know which one is ideal for you?
Well, you can first start out with our Dosha Quiz, which will give you a better idea of your Ayurvedic constitution.
Then, feel into the presence of Now that expresses through you. What do you feel NOW? What do you need most NOW? Ayurveda is a medicine of Presence, taking into account what the systems needs are in this very moment...
Then make your selection based on these understandings.
SO, WHICH TEA IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
VATA CALMING TEA: This tea is grounding, warming and moistening. Containing Ashwagandha, an adaptogenic herb which means, 'that which offers the fragrance of a horse,' this tea contributes to the production of Ojas (the energy we need to feel vitally alive - hence the horse reference), the reduction in signs of aging, to sexual vitality, to nervous-system regulation and therefore, deeper relaxation and calm.
This tea should be the go-to for:
- Vata Constitutions (Prakruti)
- Those with Vata Imbalances (Vikruti)
- Almost everyone during Vata Season (Fall to Early Winter)
- Anyone who needs comfort, warmth and calm
PITTA SOOTHING TEA: This tea is soothing, cooling and relaxing. Rose petals and Hibiscus make this blend cooling to a system in which there is too much heat. Three types of Tulsi counteract stress and anxiety, while Gotu Kola contributes to calming an overstimulated brain and nervous system.
This tea should be the go-to for:
- Pitta Constitutions (Prakruti)
- Those with Pitta Imbalances (Vikruti)
- Anyone who feels stressed, burnt-out, overheated, or who experiences inflammatory conditions
KAPHA UPLIFTING TEA: This tea is uplifting, stimulating and energizing. Cinnamon, Star Anise and Clove all bring warmth and aliveness, while Lemon Peel adds a note of lightness and is a potent purifier. Tulsi clears the lungs of Ama to aid in the prevention and relief of colds, flus, asthma and other respiratory conditions; common to Kapha-types.
This tea should be the go-to for:
- Kapha Constitutions (Prakruti)
- Those with Kapha Imbalances (Vikruti)
- Anyone who needs increased energy, motivation, inspiration + a digestive boost
TULSI HERBAL CHAI: This tea is an updated and inspired take on the classic masala chai recipe, famous in Ayurveda for offering both comfort and healing. With the additions of Tulsi and Red Rooibos (instead of black tea), this delectable chai blend is caffeine-free, meaning that you can sip on it all day without the nervine stimulation. This tea is immune-boosting, a respiratory expectorant, a digestive-fire (Agni) booster, and gently detoxifying.
See our Guide to the Perfect Chai for more details into how you can make this drink as delicious and medicinal as possible for your Dosha.
This tea should be the go-to for:
- Every Constitution
- Anyone who craves the comfort and taste of chai AND also yearns for balance digestion and wants to stay cold/flu-free this winter!
CCF TEA: This tea is a classic Ayurvedic masala (spice blend) of organic cumin, coriander and fennel. This magic tea is like the Ayurvedic chicken-soup for the soul; it is beneficial for almost everyone, it is so simple, and it tastes amazing. But, more specifically, this tea is an excellent post-meal digestion tonic. It stimulates Agni, the digestive fire, and gently cleanses the body of Ama, built-up toxins that are the by-product of improper eating habits and poor digestion/elimination. Lastly, it is a mild urinary-tract tonic and brings moisture to the digestive and eliminatory tracts. Sip throughout the day or simply after meals.
This tea should be the go-to for:
- Every Constitution (you might add a little fresh ginger for Kapha)
- Anyone who wants the perfect health-maintenance tea and/or needs some digestive support
CLEANSE & CLARIFY TEA: This tea is a gentle detox beverage, made up of organic herbs that carry the pungent, bitter and astringent tastes; all so beneficial for gradually and gently removing Ama (toxic waste) from the body. It is warming, purifying, cleansing, and lightening, so it is especially helpful for Pitta + Kapha constitutions and for those embarking on a seasonal cleanse.
This tea should be the go-to for:
- Every Constitution, except Vata in excess (consult with a trained Ayurvedic Practitioner (Tiffany) for individualized recommendations)
- Anyone who needs to cleanse away toxicity or desires a full-body reset
