How to Clean Your Copper Water Bottle
MYTH: When your Copper Water Bottle starts to tarnish, it’s time to stop drinking from it.
We receive messages from time to time, from customers who were sent into a mini-panic, a few months after the purchase of their @rasa_ayurveda Copper Water Bottle, when they noticed it had begun to tarnish.
The new, vintage-look of the bottle comes as a big surprise for some!
This could simply be because we, in the modern western world, are so accustomed to drinking out of synthetic water vessels, like plastic bottles and cups, which of course never change appearance (and accordingly, contribute nothing but hormone-disruption and toxic-leaching into our bodies and planet).
Gone are the days when natural materials were the only option for containing our precious water.
In fact, it is natural for copper to tarnish over time. And it is nothing to panic about.
However, it is possible to mitigate this process somewhat by rubbing with a soft cloth the inside and outside of the bottle with several teaspoons of lemon and 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda. Then rinse well with water and dry the bottle with a soft cloth. Do this often, and it should really help to slow the tarnishing process.
Also, avoid subjecting the bottle to high temperatures, like in a dishwasher, or by filling it with hot water. And keep the bottle dry on the inside and outside when it is not in use.
And even though you may be tempted, you don’t need to drink water from a copper vessel all day long. Once to twice a day–once in the morning and once in the evening–is enough.
However, as always, each bio-individual is entirely different! So we advise you to listen with intimacy to your body, and if you feel unwell, or you find that your bowel movements have increased significantly in frequency & liquidity, cut back on the use of your bottle, or try letting the water sit in the vessel for a shorter period of time before drinking it.
